About the Club
The Yellowknife Wado Karate Club (YWKC) was started by the Head Instructor in October of 2009. During its first two months the club attracted three students, two of which received their Black Belts in May 2014. Sensei Masaya Koyanagi received his Black Belt in May 2014 and received his 3rd dan black blet in Wado and shindo in October 2019 , and Sensei Patrick holds a 4th dan in Wado karate and shindo. Sensei Patrick (Head Instructor) achieved Yondan or 4th Degree Black Belt in October 2019.
The YWKC has brought numerous students up through the kyu ranks and continues to develop the club. Our club makes a point of bringing up experienced and high ranking black belts from the south to host clinics and workouts for our students, as well as any other martial artists from other styles able to attend. The YWKC continue to bring black belts up to the North to host clinics and views clinics and guided workouts to be an important part of our student’s development.
Our club is affiliated with the Wado Karate Association of Canada (Wado Canada). The YWKC has had the opportunity to travel south to participate in several tournaments and clinics. The dedicated students who have gone south to attend these tournaments have often fared well and taken home trophies and medals in their respective competitions. As our club continues to grow, the YWKC would like to send more students south for tournaments.
We consider ourselves to be a traditional karate club which puts a good deal of focus on the practice of Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring), and Kihon (basics). The club heavily emphasizes self-conduct and students are taught to treat others, both senior and junior, with respect. The YWKC is dedicated to fostering an environment where students are given the opportunity to train their bodies and their minds for the betterment of themselves and their community.
